Great eight: Arab teams set for FIFA World Cup

Doha, Qatar: A record eight Arab nations will compete at this month’s expanded FIFA World Cup 2026. As well as every minute of all104 matches available to watch live across the Middle East and North Africa exclusively on beIN Sports, the region’s leading sports and entertainment broadcaster will also air specially produced original content.

Featuring a range of prominent voices and contributors, including Sir David Beckham, Ronaldo Nazario, and Kaka, the documentary offers insights into the country’s world-class infrastructure, its position as a global events destination, and the growing international recognition of its diplomatic, organisational and leadership capabilities.

Once the competition gets underway on 11 June, beIN will also broadcast a series of short films spotlighting the journeys of the Arab sides.

Entitled My Country, beIN goes behind the scenes during a World Cup match of each of the eight countries, from Iraq to Saudi Arabia, Jordan to Algeria, living the build-up, watching the game, and capturing the passion for football in each nation.

Revisiting those teams who progress, an evergreen documentary will also be produced to run after the final wraps on 19 July.

Riyad Mahrez, Algeria (Group J)

Captain Riyad Mahrez will be trusted to help the Fennec Foxes progress to the knockout stages — a feat they have achieved only once. The Al-Ahli Jeddah winger averages a goal every three games at international level and will be extra motivated as, with 113 caps, he is just four appearances away from being Algeria’s most-capped player of all time.

Mohamed Salah, Egypt (Group G)

Where Mohamed Salah will be playing post-World Cup remains unknown, but for now his focus is on Egypt. The Pharaohs are huge underachievers on the global stage having qualified for the World Cup only once since 1990 and are yet to ever win a World Cup match. With a motivated Salah, they will fancy progressing from a group that includes Belgium, Iran, and New Zealand.

Aymen Hussein, Iraq (Group I)

The decisive goal that saw Iraq qualify came from the 30-year-old Al-Karma striker, who celebrated his country’s return to the global stage for the first time in 40 years by posting a video from 2017 in which he stated his goal was to take Iraq back to the World Cup. Mission accomplished, the Lions of Mesopotamia will hope to surprise in a group that includes France, Senegal, and Norway.

Musa Al-Taamari, Jordan (Group J)

Jordan will make their World Cup debut this summer, 40 years after their first qualifying campaign. Rennes winger Musa Al-Taamari is one of only a handful of players plying their trade outside of Asia and will carry the responsibility of a nation. Aged 28, the captain has netted 24 goals in 90 games, including in an Asian Cup semi-final win and a further seven during World Cup qualifying.

With the powerful presence of captain Achraf Hakimi — widely regarded as one of the best players on the planet — it speaks volumes that topping a group that includes Brazil, as well as Scotland and Haiti, would no longer be a surprise.

Qatar will be looking to build on a maiden campaign that underwhelmed and much of their hopes are pinned on Akram Afif once again. The mercurial forward, twice named AFC Player of the Year and winner of the Golden Boot and Best Player at the Asian Cup Qatar 2023, will arrive determined to put points on the board in a favourable group that contains Canada, Bosnia, and Switzerland.

Salem Al-Dawsari, Saudi Arabia (Group H)

Known as the man for the big occasion, the Al Hilal attacker shocked the world when he struck the decisive goal to beat Argentina 2-1 in 2022. Now 34, he is still putting in eye-catching performances, and in a group that includes Spain, Uruguay, and Cape Verde, nobody is more likely to help the Green Falcons progress than the reigning AFC Asian Player of the Year.

أثارت صورة متداولة تحاكي غلاف مجلة تايم الأمريكية الشهيرة تفاعلاً واسعاً على منصات التواصل الاجتماعي، حيث ضمت الصورة عدداً من أبرز نجوم كرة القدم المنتظر حضورهم في كأس العالم 2026، في مشهد درامي حمل عنواناً لافتاً THE TIME HAS COME- Who Leaves Immortal? أو لقد حانت اللحظة.. من سيرحل خالداً؟

والحقيقة أن الغلاف تم تصمميه بالذكاء الاصطناعي وبدا ذلك واضحا من خلال بعض التغييرات في ملامح اللاعبين وعدم دقة الغلاف التي اعتادتها تايم في إصدارتها، وما أكد ذلك هو إصدار مجلة تايم لعددها الأخير أمس الثلاثاء احتفاءً بقائمة أكثر 100 شخصية مؤثرة في الرياضة لعام 2026، وتصدّر الغلاف نجم كرة السلة العالمي ليبرون جيمس، احتفاء بإنجازاته ومسيرته الاستثنائية.

ويُظهر الغلاف المزيف الذي انتشر بشكل فيروسي على مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي، مجموعة من نجوم اللعبة في صورة جماعية بالأبيض والأسود بإطلالات رسمية أنيقة بالبدلات الكلاسيكية يلتفون حول كأس العالم الذهبية ، في محاولة بصرية لاختصار حجم الرهانات العاطفية والتاريخية التي تحيط بالنسخة المقبلة من المونديال، والتي تُقام في الولايات المتحدة وكندا والمكسيك بمشاركة 48 منتخباً لأول مرة في تاريخ البطولة.

ويبدو أن من صمم الغلاف قام باستخدام أبعادا عاطفية تلامس عشاق كرة القدم ومشجعي هؤلاء الأساطير حيث ضم غلاف تايم الغير حقيقي أسماء ضخمة من أجيال مختلفة، من بينها ميسي وكريستيانو رونالدو ومبابي وهالاند و بيلينغهام ونيمار وهاري كين وحكيمي وفينيسيوس جونيور ولامين يامال ومحمد صلاح، في توليفة تجمع بين أساطير صنعت تاريخ اللعبة، ونجوم يعيشون ذروة مسيرتهم، ومواهب شابة تستعد لوراثة نجومية المسرح العالمي لكرة القدم.

ولم يكن هذا الانتشار مجرد تفاعل عابر مع صورة جذابة أوغلاف مجلة، بل بدا أقرب إلى انعكاس لحالة ترقب عالمية تحيط بمونديال 2026، باعتباره بطولة قد تحمل وداعاً رمزياً لجيل كامل من أساطير كرة القدم.

اللافت أن النسخة غير الرسمية المتداولة وجدت صدى أكبر بين جماهير كرة القدم، لأنها قدّمت ما بدا كأنه الصورة التي كان ينتظرها الجمهور صورة لا تكتفي بتمثيل بلد مضيف أو نجم واحد، بل تجمع المشهد المونديالي كله في إطار واحد الحلم، الوداع، الوراثة، والصراع على الخلود.

Doha, Qatar: From a fan's perspective, the 24 Hours of Le Mans stands apart from any other motorsport event in the world. Every year, more than 300,000 fans travel to the Circuit de la Sarthe to experience the unique atmosphere that makes Le Mans unlike any other race. From the famous drivers’ parade in the town center, to the spectacle of racing through the night at more than 300km/h, the event has become a week-long celebration of sports car culture and racing heritage.

For Team Qatar by Iron Lynx, racing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans represents a landmark moment on the international motorsport stage. Participation in one of the world’s biggest races places the team alongside some of the largest manufacturers, such as Ferrari, Toyota and Porsche, reinforcing Qatar’s presence within elite motorsport.

Steeped in history and tradition, the legendary endurance classic is the ultimate test of innovation, teamwork, speed, and stamina. Since the inaugural event in 1923, the race has continuously pushed the limits of technology and human performance, earning its reputation as one of the most prestigious events in global sport.

As one of the three races that form motorsport’s famous Triple Crown, Le Mans carries enormous prestige. It sits alongside IndyCar’s showpiece event, the Indianapolis 500, and the jewel in Formula 1’s crown — the Monaco Grand Prix. To date, only one man has achieved victory in all three: British racer Graham Hill. And only one driver has come close to matching Hill’s historic treble.

Formula 1 double champion Fernando Alonso secured back-to-back victories at Le Mans in 2018 and 2019. He won Monaco for the first time in 2006 and came close to winning the Indy 500 in 2017. As an active competitor, he may still achieve motorsport’s holy trinity, while only one racing team, McLaren, has achieved success in all three races.

While many drivers have crossed over from F1 to race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the endurance classic has also attracted household names who have been drawn to the famous event. Actor Paul Newman finished second overall and won his class in 1979. More recently, Manchester United goalkeeper Fabian Barthez enjoyed a hat-trick of appearances in the race, while his footballing team-mate Zinedine Zidane had the honor of flying the flag to start the great race in 2024.

Zidane followed in the footsteps of famous faces who have waved the French tricolor to get the race underway. The Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), which organizes Le Mans, has entrusted the flag-waving duty to a figure of international standing every year since 1949, when the race returned following the Second World War. While the role was predominantly reserved for politicians and motorsport executives, in recent years, sporting icons have taken on the honor.

In the last decade, tennis legends Roger Federer (2025) and Rafael Nadal (2018) have waved the national flag, while basketball superstar LeBron James had the privilege in 2023. The official starter for the 94th 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2026 will be Sir Mark Cavendish, the Tour de France’s all-time stage wins record-holder. He will drop the tricolor at precisely 4pm on Saturday, June 13.

Another aspect of competing for 24 uninterrupted hours is that it pushes every competitor to their physical and mental limits. Drivers must maintain concentration through darkness, changing weather conditions and relentless traffic. Endurance racing is also built on teamwork, strategy, and trust as engineers and mechanics work around the clock with precision and discipline.

It is these aspects which make the race such a fascination for spectators, who make the annual pilgrimage to the French countryside in the middle of summer. The long, sunlit nights offer a perfect climate for fans to enjoy the atmosphere of the campsites and the thrill of seeing headlights rush along the legendary Mulsanne Straight beyond the hours of sunset. Their renowned location also includes the famous funfair and the Ferris wheel that offers panoramic views of the track.

Another enduring characteristic of the 24 Hours of Le Mans is the track itself. Much of the 13.6km Circuit de la Sarthe still uses public roads of France’s Pays-de-la-Loire region, preserving the spirit of early motor racing from more than a century ago. The layout includes some of the most famous corners in world motorsport, including Tertre Rouge, Indianapolis, Arnage and the sweeping Porsche Curves.

Fans are also drawn to the scale and spectacle of the competition. This year, 62 cars across three categories will fight for position on track at the same time.
