Qatar golfers look to excel at Asian Games
Doha, Qatar: Qatar’s golfers will look to turn a period of intensive preparation and growing international exposure into a strong show when they compete at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
Saleh Al Kaabi, Ali Al Shahrani and Daniil Sokolov will represent Qatar in the men’s individual and team competitions, while Nada Radwan will compete in the women’s individual event. The delegation is headed by Salman Al-Khanji, with Dutch coach Bjorn Bastian leading the team’s preparations.
The golf competitions will be held at Kasugai Country Club East Course in Aichi Prefecture from September 30 to October 3, featuring four medal events: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s teams and women’s teams.
The competitions will follow the internationally approved stroke play format over four consecutive rounds, with each round consisting of 18 holes.
The medals will be awarded on October 3.
Qatar’s preparations included an overseas training camp in Rabat, Morocco, which continued until the end of August at the Royal Golf Dar es Salam courses.
The camp focused on physical fitness, technical details, tactical and mental skills, as well as helping the players adapt to different playing conditions.
“We are well prepared and looking forward to a strong performance,” Al Kaabi told The Peninsula.
“The Asian Games golf tournament is a competitive competition and it will require a good performance from us. We held our training camp in Morocco and we are in good shape to put our best show. We are looking forward to an improved performance.”
Al Shahrani said the team’s participation in international competitions this year had also strengthened its confidence ahead of the Asian Games.
“We have competed in several international competitions this year and we feel confident ahead of the Asian Games,” he said.
“The Morocco training camp was really helpful in our preparations for the tough Asian Games test. We are looking forward to a good performance in a tough field.”
Qatar’s golfers have gained valuable experience through Gulf, Arab and Asian championships, as well as participation in the Qatar Masters, one of the prominent tournaments on the European Tour agenda.
That exposure has helped Al Kaabi and Al Shahrani become more accustomed to the demands of major competitions.
Golf at the Asian Games has traditionally been dominated by players from the Republic of Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong and India.
