Chiefs confirm Abrahams loan deal

Kaizer Chiefs confirmed the signing of Stellenbosch winger Faiz Abrahams on a season-long loan deal with an option to buy on Thursday. lebandit.lat

Phakaaathi reported on Monday that Chiefs were set to raid Stellies for Abrahams this week, after sealing a deal for 21 year-old Langelihle Phili from the Cape Winelands side.

Chiefs – ‘Abrahams already boasts an impressive football resume’

“Kaizer Chiefs have bolstered their squad with the signing of Faiz Abrahams, who arrives at Naturena on a season-long loan from Stellenbosch FC, with an option to buy at the end of the campaign,” wrote Chiefs on their official website.

“At just 21 years old, Abrahams already boasts an impressive football résumé. He made his PSL debut in April 2024 – a day after celebrating his 19^th birthday. Abrahams later moved to Stellenbosch and also gained international experience in Israel before returning to South Africa last season, where he featured for Stellenbosch.

“On the international stage, Abrahams has represented South Africa at U20 level, playing a key role in the country’s 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations triumph. He registered one assist in three appearances during the tournament, further underlining his potential as a winger and creative midfielder.

“Abrahams now joins Amakhosi as the team prepares for the MTN8 quarterfinal clash against Golden Arrows this weekend, adding depth and youthful energy to the squad ahead of a demanding season.”

Busy in the transfer market

Apart from Phili and Abrahams, Chiefs have also signed goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner, central defender Thabo Moloisane and central midfielder Adolf Bitegeko in this transfer window. Chiefs have also signed striker Khanyiso Mayo on a permanent deal, after he spent last season on loan at Amakhosi.

Chiefs will play Arrows on Sunday at FNB Stadium. Kick off is 6pm.

A Stormers stalwart will bring the curtain down on his playing career after Friday night’s Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry clash against the All Blacks in Cape Town.

Director of rugby John Dobson confirmed on Thursday that veteran scrumhalf Dewaldt Duvenage will make his final appearance for the Stormers before moving into a full-time coaching role.

The 38-year-old has been named on the bench for the tour opener at Cape Town Stadium.

“I think this will be his last game for the Stormers and what a way to finish,” Dobson said. “It will be his last game unless we get a run of injuries.”

Dobson said the decision was driven by the Stormers’ long-term planning, with Imad Khan, Cobus Reinach, Stefan Ungerer and rising youngster Ezekiel Ngobeni all in the scrumhalf mix.

“Imad has come through so well, and Cobus is coming back,” he said. “Stefan is good, and then Ezekiel is coming on really strong.”

Dobson rejected suggestions that Duvenage’s inclusion against the All Blacks was purely a farewell gesture.

“People are thinking I am being sentimental by choosing Dewaldt. The answer is no,” he said.

“The reason we did it is that we have to put out a good team against the Cheetahs in the Currie Cup. I wanted Jean-Luc du Plessis, who is the Currie Cup captain, to play and I wanted Stefan.

“I know it’s miserable for them. Stefan and JL were both disappointed – everyone wants to play this game.”

MALLETT: Stormers can rattle All Blacks

Duvenage will take up a coaching role overseeing the attack structures in the Stormers’ pathways, U23 and Currie Cup teams.

“He will finish and go and coach,” Dobson said. “He is a great servant and what a way for him to finish.”

Kaizer Chiefs duo of Khanyisa Mayo and Bradley Cross are back at the training grounds after missing the opening match of the season.

KHANYISA MAYO AND BRADLEY CROSS RETURN FOR AIZER CHIEFS

Mayo missed the pre-season through injury, and he recently underwent a hernia operation before signing a permanent deal with Chiefs.

He was on loan from Algerian giants CR Belouizdad but Amakhosi had an option to make his stay permanent which they took.

Now, Mayo is ready to compete again, and could be in line to make his first appearance of the season against Golden Arrows on Sunday.

The same can be said about Cross who is back after suffering a leg injury when Chiefs faced Scottland FC in the Toyota Cup on 26 July.

His injury was initially thought to be serious but the left-footed defender has made huge progress, and he’s back on the training pitch.

HUGE AMAKHOSI BOOST FOR CAF CONFEDERATION CUP

The return of the two players is undoubtedly a major boost for Chiefs as they will need their experience in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Mayo has continental experience having previously featured in both the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.

Cross had a taste of continental football last season when Chiefs played in the same competition and reached the group stage.

As The South African reported earlier, the Glamour Boys will face in the winner between Zambian outfit Red Arrows and Madagascar’s FC Rouge in the second preliminary round in October.
