À dix minutes du terme, Hyeon-Gyu Oh a offert la victoire aux siens en trouvant le chemin des filets à la 80e minute. Bien servi par Hwang In-beom, l’attaquant a conclu une belle action collective pour permettre à la Corée du Sud de signer un précieux succès inaugural dans ce Mondial 2026.

Le Mexique prend les commandes du groupe A

Grâce à sa victoire 2-0 contre l’Afrique du Sud, le Mexique termine cette première journée à la première place du groupe A. El Tri devance la Corée du Sud à la différence de buts, tandis que la République tchèque et l’Afrique du Sud ferment la marche sans le moindre point.

Une deuxième journée déjà décisive

La suite de la compétition s’annonce passionnante dans cette poule. Le 18 juin à 16h GMT, la République tchèque tentera de se relancer face à l’Afrique du Sud. Le lendemain, dans le choc du groupe, le Mexique affrontera la Corée du Sud à 01h00 GMT. Cette rencontre pourrait déjà peser lourd dans la course à la qualification pour les huitièmes de finale de la Coupe du Monde 2026.

In the race to be crowned KwaZulu-Natal’s top First XV, both Maritzburg College and Hilton face potentially tricky assignments this weekend against opponents who may have very different ideas about the expected outcome.

For the first time since the mid-2000s, College sit atop the provincial standings on the countback system. Their slender advantage over Hilton comes down largely to one additional marquee victory — a win over Durban High School. Hilton’s scheduled home fixture against DHS was cancelled due to illness, and a suitable alternative date could never be arranged. Added to that, College also claimed the head-to-head encounter between the two title contenders.

As things stand, the title is very much College’s to lose.

The Red, Black and White host Michaelhouse on Goldstones in what promises to be a sterner challenge than many might anticipate. House began 2026 as one of the country’s surprise packages. While their recent defeat to Westville was somewhat out of character, their performances in local derbies suggest a side that has consistently been competitive. With a little more fortune in several tight contests, they could easily have been ranked among the province’s leading teams.

Fine margins have defined much of Michaelhouse’s season. They may feel they are due an upset victory or two to balance the rugby karma.

College, however, continue to find ways to win. They were not at their fluent best against Kearsney last weekend, yet still displayed the defensive organisation, physicality and commitment required to grind out a result. Their tremendous gees and uncompromising approach make them a difficult side to beat, even when operating below their peak.

Hilton, meanwhile, travel to the Stott where Kearsney will be waiting with confidence that they can cause an upset.

The One-Stripe have shown throughout the season that they can create opportunities and play attractive, constructive attacking rugby. At times, however, they have also been their own worst enemies, with unforced errors undermining promising passages of play. Should they eliminate those mistakes, Kearsney have the ability to secure a much-needed victory.

Hilton will arrive as favourites. Year after year they are among the country’s best-prepared and most disciplined teams. Their forward pack is likely to place significant pressure on the hosts, and if they can establish dominance up front, the visitors should create enough opportunities to keep the scoreboard moving.

Elsewhere, the remainder of the province’s major rugby schools have already shifted their focus to examinations and are finished with rugby for the term.

Westville, one of South Africa’s largest boys’ schools, are notably the first of the major rugby powers to bring their 2026 season to a close.

Kearsney College 1st XV lost 22-24 to Maritzburg College

Kearsney welcomed high-flying Maritzburg College to Bota’s Hill on Founders Day, for what proved to be a highly entertaining and fiercely contested fixture.

College opened the scoring in the 7th minute with a converted try. After establishing a strong platform from a scrum, they worked patiently through multiple phases, before exploiting space on the edge to score in the corner and take an early 7-0 lead.

Kearsney responded in the 12th minute following a sustained period of pressure. Keanu Wiliamson combined well with Lwazi Mbebe, who released Luke Grobbelaar into space. Grobbelaar produced a clever chip over the final defender, regathered brilliantly, and crossed for superb try to reduce the deficit to 7-5.

Just three minutes later, some slick counter-attacking play involving Daniel Miskey and Mbebe created an opportunity for captain Nhlanhla Ndlovu, who showcased excellent footwork before racing away to score. The try handed Kearsney a 10-7 lead.

The remainder of the first half developed into a real arm wrestle, with both sides enjoying periods of possession and territory. As half-time approached, Williamson produced an incisive line break, before Ndlovu finished strongly from a pick-and-go to score his second try of the afternoon. Kearsney entered the break with a deserved 17-10 advantage.

College emerged from halftime with renewed intensity and dominated both territory and possession during the opening stages of the second half. Their pressure was rewarded with two tries in the first 10 minutes as they capitalized on a few Kearsney errors to move into a 21-17 lead.

Kearsney responded magnificently in the 53rd minute. Crisp handling and accurate short passing created space for Williamson, whose well-timed pass sent Mkhize clear down the touchline. Mkhize showed excellent pace to finish in the corner and restore Kearsney’s lead at 22-21 with 15 minutes remaining.

The lead was short-lived, however. From the ensuing kickoff, College earned a breakdown penalty which Du Toit successfully converted to edge his side …

Parce que lui aime gagner. Donc, on va faire en sorte qu’il ait la meilleure des dernières coupes du monde. », a réagi Mbappé.

Questionné sur le fait de voir le technicien tricolore comme sélectionneur d’une autre nation que la France, Mbappé ne l’imagine pas. « En espérant que ce soit sa dernière parce que j’espère qu’il va pas la rejouer avec une autre équipe. J’ai vu, ils ont dit l’Italie. Ce serait moche ça. », a-t-il ajouté au micro de la chaîne privée.

James Lowe is set to bring the curtain down on a remarkable Leinster career when the defending champions face the Vodacom Bulls in the URC final at Croke Park.

On Tuesday, Leinster confirmed the Ireland wing will depart the club at the end of the season.

Next Friday night’s URC decider will be Lowe’s 102nd and final appearance for the province he has called home since arriving from New Zealand in 2017.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: Bulls seek redemption in rematch

Lowe departs as the club’s record try-scorer, having crossed the line 71 times, while helping the Dublin outfit win five league titles (Pro12/Pro14/URC) and one Investec Champions Cup (2017-18).

Lowe played the full 80 minutes in last season’s 32-7 URC final victory over the Bulls at Croke Park.

In a social media post on Tuesday, Leinster called Lowe a “true-blue legend” and urged their fans to “give Lowey the send off he deserves at the URC grand final!”

The 33-year-old also became a key figure for Ireland after qualifying through residency, earning 45 Test caps and playing a central role in Six Nations title triumphs in 2023 and 2024.
