FIFA WORLD CUP 2026: Egypt File FIFA Complaint Against Referee Letexier After Argentina Loss

Argentina’s dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt to advance to the quarter-finals of the ongoing World Cup has escalated into a major row, with the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) lodging a formal complaint with FIFA.

Even after Egypt had raced to a commanding 2-0 lead in Atlanta, Argentina came back in the last few minutes and managed to seal the game 3-2, advancing to the quarter-finals.

However, the game has sparked debates due to a series of controversial decisions by French referee Francois Letexier and his officiating team. Argentina completed the turnaround in stoppage time, with Enzo Fernandez heading a 93rd-minute winner, leaving the Egyptian team and coaching staff frustrated with rage.

In a strongly-worded statement released on Wednesday, the EFA confirmed that it had bypassed standard post-match protocol to directly approach FIFA — football’s governing body.

“Hany Aburida, President of the Egyptian Football Federation, filed a complaint with FIFA, demanding an investigation into the French referee Francois Letexier… after the serious refereeing mistakes committed by the team of referees and double standards, which caused the Egypt team to lose the match and leave the World Cup,” the Egypt federation said in a statement, according to AFP news agency.

Egypt’s protest focuses on three key incidents. While they were leading 1-0, Mostafa Ziko had a goal ruled out after a VAR review for a soft foul, denying Egypt a potential second goal.

Later, when scores were level in the second half, a challenge on Mohamed Salah inside the penalty area went unnoticed.

Finally, Egypt also alleged a foul by Alexis MacAllister in the build-up to Argentina’s late winner.

“Aburida demanded the investigation of the entire team of referees, including the video technology referees, because of the blatant errors and insisting on not reviewing some of the footage that we believe are in favour of the Egyptian national team, and we see in it the Pharaohs’ right to a correct goal and a penalty”, said the statement.
