Lions Trade Running Back David Montgomery to Texans

The Detroit Lions traded running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans for a draft pick, saving about $3.5 million in cap space. Montgomery, who was unhappy with his reduced role last season, will join a Texans offense that has struggled at the back.

The Lions sent David Montgomery to the Texans in exchange for a draft pick, freeing roughly $3.5 million in salary‑cap room. Montgomery, who turns 29 this June, had a diminished role behind Jahmyr Gibbs in 2023, posting career lows in rushing yards and touches.

Montgomery said he was unhappy with the reduced role, and Lions GM Brad Holmes said the team would move forward. The trade leaves Detroit looking for a replacement and gives Houston a veteran back to bolster its offense.
